THE TRYON STREET ENSEMBLE

The Tryon Street Ensemble, an accomplished group of musicians from The Charlotte Symphony Orchestra, is organized by Alan Black, principal cellist with the symphony. Joining him onstage are Kari Giles, Tatiana Karpova, and Ning Zhao.

Black has appeared as a soloist and chamber musician with Yo-Yo Ma and Bobby McFerrin . An active recitalist in this country as well as Europe, Black is the recipient of many awards for his contributions to the Arts in the Charlotte region and founder of Chamber Music at Saint Peter’s. He holds degrees from UCLA and Indiana University.

Kari Giles, violist, is an assistant concert master for The Charlotte Symphony and has also played with the highly regarded Minnesota Orchestra and The Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra. Tatiana Karpova, violinist, is an active player with the Providence String Ensemble. She earned a DMA from the famed Moscow Gressin Institutus of Musik. Ning Zhao, viola, has played with orchestras in both the United States and China. He is actively involved with several chamber groups and education outreach programs, and holds an MA from the Cleveland Institute.
